Study results released Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association report that for-profit hospice services may be selecting patients who are less expensive to treat – leaving the pricier patients to nonprofit agencies (Brown, 2/1).

You might want to take a look at a new fraud and abuse resource Medicare is handing out to freshly minted physicians.  At the request of medical schools, the HHS Office of Inspector General has issued the “Roadmap for New Physicians:  Avoiding Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse.”

The new tool summarizes the five main federal fraud and abuse laws, and offers tips regarding how doctors can comply with the laws.  Those five laws are the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Stark Law, the Exclusion Statute, and the Civil Monetary Penalties Law.
