Study: Long term care industry to get boost from increasing life expectancy

With the life expectancy of Americans now over 78 years, demand for long term care facilities is strong and future prospects continue to look positive for services such as assisted living, nursing homes and home care, according to Kalorama Information’s new report. Kalorama estimated the long-term care market in the U.S. to be $258 billion in 2010.

Studies have shown that many Baby Boomers don’t have enough in savings to sustain them at the level of living they expect or to withstand long-term illness or health catastrophes. The picture hasn’t changed much for the next generation – those who are 45 now – according to a study by the Urban Institute and the Kaiser Family Foundation.

$1 billion…could be gained by AARP over the next 10 years as a result of the AARP-supported health reform law that could drive a large migration of seniors to Medigap plans, of which AARP is a leading provider, according to a new report by three GOP members of the House Ways and Means Committee.

A study of the costs of nursing home care, release April 21, 2011 by John Hancock Financial, reports, “the national average annual cost of care in the U.S. is $85,775 for a private room in a nursing home; $75,555 for a semi-private room in a nursing home.[1]
AARP estimated the value of unpaid caregiving at $350 billion in 2006.[4] The Kaiser Family Foundation reported in 2009 that “Direct out-of-pocket care spending by individuals and families accounts for 22 percent” of the $178 billion spent on nursing home care – more than $39 billion.[5]
